Re: r^-5 "Orbital Decay"?

I thought that was do to rounding errors? It's both, together. If the circular orbit were stable (like in r^-2), rounding errors don't matter... the orbit self-corrects. And if there were no rounding errors, no perturbations, the stable vs unstable distinction wouldn't matter. It's like the proverb...

Re: r^-5 "Orbital Decay"?

Neat stuff! I wasn't thinking about dimensions when I added that feature... I was just looking to simply tweak the laws of physics and see what happens. But you're absolutely right. The simulator was envisioned as a 2D slice of a 3D world, but of course, it could just as well be a 2D slice of a 4D w...

Re: Evolution Simulator

Yup, the evolution simulator is still around, but on the back burner at the moment. I'd been having trouble nailing down exactly what the game should be like... so, as Robly said, I started working on Shocktopus instead (where the core idea was a lot clearer to me). The simulator started when I want...

Re: Welcome!

Hi, I'm 19683. Welcome! (Thanks to google) I know it's some large power of three. I sense there's a story behind that login? Hi. I agree, this way I don't have to fill Andy's inbox full of e-mails! A real time saver for me! ;) Then again, I imagine the forum might be its own time-sink... If I'm on ...

Re: r^-5 "Orbital Decay"?

Not necessarily.. The universe is isotropic (I think) and infinite, so one will be pulled from all sides the same.. But how would the universe know which "side" of the infinity has more mass? Yes, classically things would be very divergent on such a big scale. Though once we get to those scales, I ...

Re: Who else is a playtester?

"I" ... wait, I'm making the game, does that count? As a heads up, I haven't seen any of the playtesters on the forum yet, but they may well show up. And as for what you can share, I can't really think of any limits, aside from sharing the actual game. Level descriptions, game mechanics, any screens...

Re: r^-5 "Orbital Decay"?

That certainly would make space travel a lot easier. And compulsory.

You could visit all the galaxies. At once. In some roiling ball of incredibly hot matter condensed at the heart of the universe.

Re: Level editor?

Okway.

I mean, when you ask with that puppy-dog face, how can I say no? That should be pretty straightforward, actually. I'll add it onto my to-do list.

Re: r^-5 "Orbital Decay"?

Yeah, it reminds me of those old spirographs. The planet can only get so close to the star, and only so far, and then inside that range it just spirals around. It turns out r^-2 is pretty special for getting closed elliptical orbits. (Thank goodness for the fact Newtonian gravity *is* r^-2... just i...

Re: The List

Ah, so in some ways like A Slower Speed of Light . That's the MIT game where -- no surprises here -- the speed of light is slowed down. (Somewhat like Velocity Raptor in 3+1 D.) You just walk around and experience the world, and it doesn't really have much in the way of game elements. As for that Sl...
