Hello!

Post by guy0matic » Sun Oct 25, 2020 1:58 pm

Hi--

I got my PhD in physics, but fell into software almost immediately, taking a position at Atari Research Labs here in Silicon Valley. I immediately set to work on making a special relativity game (this was 1983 (I think?)) but Atari fell apart before I could carry the work to conclusion. It has been a lifelong dream to complete that work...I have some specific ideas beyond just a demo environment I'd like to experiment with. Your Velocity Raptor comes close to what I built and have in mind. A 2D, open interactive world, depicting the Lorentz transformation, without accounting for light delay (your "Measured" mode).

Well, I am approaching retirement now, and got permission to work on my dream! I quickly hacked up something in Java, just to convince myself it could be done. I am now porting it to JavaScript, so it can be downloaded from the web, and am thinking maybe something aimed at phones might be fun for students.

I took a pause to search the web for previous work, and found your site! I would love to know what other work is similar to Velocity Raptor: interactively going through a 2D work depicting Lorentz contraction and time dilation. Got any pointers? Also, wondering if there are any published articles about TestTubeGames or Velocity Raptor in relativity land in particular. Do you have articles or any info at all on how it has been used in classrooms?

Cheers, great work, keep it up!

Hey. It's just James. I may comment on more later because many of the topics, toys, and games here are very interesting.

Thank you for having me!
